K-68 and Metcalf Road Intersection ImprovementsThis KDOT Access Management Project in Louisburg, KS, developed from a Traffic Signal Needs Study completed by MHS. Upon funding, MHS was selected to provide planning, surveying, engineering design and inspection services for the intersection project. The existing 4-way stop controlled intersection with a single 4-lane approach and three 2-lane approaches was improved to two 5-lane approaches and two 3-lane approaches with a traffic signal. Improvements in addition to the widened roadways and traffic signal include curb and gutter, sidewalks, storm sewers, and utility main relocations over the 1,900 LF of street construction. Careful planning was exercised to minimize impacts to adjacent homeowners and commercial businesses while satisfying stopping and intersection sight distances meeting AASHTO requirements.
4th & Poplar Leavenworth IntersectionMHS worked closely with city staff and local stakeholders to provide a design tailored to local truck traffic to provide easier access onto US-73 highway. The 4th & Poplar signalized intersection design included the expansion of the existing 4 lane highway to include a right turn lane and 2 protected left turn lanes. The design involved detailed profile analysis to maintain an intersection grade suited for truck acceleration while still providing access to the existing park, football field, residences, and businesses. The 600 feet improvement to Poplar Street included the conversion of the existing ditch street to a curb and gutter street, replacement of a 72" CMP, ADA compliant pedestrian routing, and new signal.

Quest DiagnosticsClient: Quest Diagnostics, Lenexa, Kansas
MHS designed a parking lot expansion of 120 additional parking spaces. Project elements included evaluation of existing detention basins, storm water quality features, and value engineering for avoidance of existing utilities and subsurface materials. MHS also provided third-part inspections of all exterior improvements.
Leavenworth County EMSClient: Leavenworth County, Kansas
MHS provided civil engineering and land surveying services for the new Emergency Medical Services administrative building and four-bay ambulance garage. Site improvements consisted of grading, retaining walls, parking lot and public walk improvements, and storm, water, and sanitary sewer improvements.
Independence Hike/Bike TrailClient: City of Atchison, Kansas
MHS completed the project layout and design of trail along the Missouri River north of Atchison, Kansas. Design entailed horizontal and vertical layout of 4,000 LF of ADA walking trail, 19,500 LF of gravel trail along the levy, 80-ft pedestrian bridge and 1,700-sq. yd. parking lot.
Lenexa Park RestroomsClient: City of Lenexa, Kansas
MHS partnered with Finkle|Williams Architecture and Indigo Design in providing three new restrooms, playground, and other amenities to the City of Lenexa’s Mill Creek Park and Sar-Ko-Par Park. MHS provided land survey and civil engineering services for the design and construction layout of three restroom sites and playground. Project site elements included 1,100 SY of concrete sidewalks and trails, 300 LF of ledge stone retaining wall, 500 LF of sanitary service lines, 450 LF of water service lines, and 1,100 LF of utility conduits. The water demand of the restroom flush valves in Sar-Ko-Par Park initiated an overdue extension and looping of a public water main through the park. MHS coordinated 1,700 LF public water main extensions with Water One, connecting from 89th Street to 87th Street along the interior park road and parking lots. The looped system now provides adequate pressures and safer drinking water for the eastern half of the park.
Basehor-Linwood Middle SchoolClient: Basehor-Linwood USD 458 ,br>
MHS teamed with a local architect in designing a new middle school to service grades 6 through 8. Project includes over 125,000 SF of new classrooms and facilities. Design elements include preliminary plan, final plan, traffic study, sanitary study. Full construction documents were provided for the associated private site improvements, public roads, sanitary lift station, and detention basins.
Pinehurst DevelopmentClient: Pinehurst Properties, LLC
The 95-acre Pinehurst subdivision in Basehor, KS, was designed as a mixed use development including high density residential and commercial areas. With primary access to the development off of State Avenue (US Highway 24/40) creating a concern, MHS completed a traffic study of the area. Due to its close proximity to the highway, a standard signalized intersection would potentially develop a queue back onto the major highway, but MHS provided a solution to keep traffic moving and eliminate a traffic disaster: a roundabout. The final design of the intersection included a single lane roundabout, a dedicated right turn lane with island separation for traffic entering the intersection from the highway, and an 86 foot diameter landscaped center island.
Pathfinder ElementaryClient: Platte County R-III School District, Missouri
The Pathfinder Elementary School, is the result of an immediate need that the Platte County R-III School District was faced with to provide additional lower elementary classrooms (Kindergarten through 2nd Grade). Unique elements of the project included an infiltration detention basin to mitigate increased storm runoff from the site developments, preservation of native vegetation, and an improved storm water system to alleviate area flooding. The school grounds include 600 LF of retaining walls allowing for additional play areas, 5,000 SY of parking and drive lanes, and sidewalk trail connections to the City’s trail master plan. MHS services for the project included full boundary and topographic survey of the 10 acre site, modification to Kansas City, Missouri’s Land Use Plan, storm drainage study, traffic study, and construction documents for street, storm, and utility improvements.
Kill Creek Streamway Trails - Johnson County, KSClient: Johnson County Parks and Recreation District, Kansas
MHS provided survey and engineering design services for critical stream crossings along trail corridor. These crossings included trail underpass beneath the 95th Street County Bridge, trail underpass beneath 127th Street Bridge, a 40-ft span pedestrian bridge, and a 100-ft span pedestrian bridge. Additional project duties included trail approach and culvert design, bridge abutment design, HEC-RAS modeling of the Kill Creek, County, State, and Federal Permitting, and construction observation services.
Lansing Community ParkClient: City of Lansing, Kansas Parks Department
MHS teamed with Ochsner Hare and Hare landscape architects to make Lansing’s 2005 Park Master Plan a reality. MHS project duties included design, bidding, and construction administration of all civil improvements. Project elements included 1,105 LF of park road and entryway, 11,600 LF of trail, two retention ponds to serve dual purpose of flood control and fishing recreation, 65-ft Viking Bridge, three adult soccer fields, two youth soccer fields, three softball fields, and baseball field. Additional project duties included mass grading of the site, permitting with State and Federal Agencies, project letting, and construction observation services.
Rockville Road Arterial Street ImprovementsClient: City of Louisburg, Kansas
MHS staff has extensive experience in street corridor design and preliminary profile analysis. The Rockville Road improvements in Louisburg, KS, included preliminary surveying and engineering design for 0.75-mile arterial street geometric improvements. A key project challenge was the required saving of three existing tree lines located along the project corridor while providing the necessary profile revisions for site distance improvements. Due to the significant profile grading requirements several driveways presented alignment and grade challenges during the design phase. The project included 3,200 LF of enclosed storm sewer, a 3’ x 10’ x 83’ RCB, intersection tie-ins, traffic control, sidewalks, pavement markings, and signage. Additionally, MHS lead coordination efforts for all utility relocations along the corridor.
Franklin Park - Prairie Village, KSClient: City of Prairie Village, Kansas
Project design to provide park renovation design elements that included 200 LF aesthetic limestone lined drainage channel along Roe Avenue, restroom facility, utility connections, increased parking within the park and on-street parking along Roe, ADA accessible sidewalks, and playground areas.
Angel Falls Trail ImprovementsClient: City of Lansing, Kansas
MHS worked closely with the City of Lansing, Kansas, to accomplish their objectives for this 1/2 mile section of trail while maintaining the tight budget constraints of the project. MHS took extra care to meet the client’s expectations regarding horizontal alignment of the trail, preservation of trees along the corridor, and location of amenities. The design included 2,300 LF of a 10-ft wide concrete trail and 110 LF pedestrian bridge over Sevenmile Creek. In addition to the trail design hydraulic analysis was provided on 7-Mile Creek for setting the bridge at elevation that created ‘no net rise’ in the FEMA defined floodplain. Additional environmental permitting was provided to the State of Kansas Department of Water Resources and Army Corp of Engineers.
MoDot Missouri Hwy 1 & 64th Street ImprovementsClient: City of Gladstone, Missouri
The MO-1 and 64th Street Improvements project consisted of a 0.7-mile geometric intersection improvement including traffic signal modifications, turn lane additions, and pedestrian/bicycle safety routing through a highly congested corridor. The project was driven by the development of a 9-acre mixed use Business park. Community groups resisted the project because of the additional traffic and safety impacts on an adjacent school. MHS designers proposed a street section with an offset sidewalk corridor and incorporation of natural borders to enhance the safety level of pedestrian traffic while achieving the required intersection improvements for increased traffic capacity.
Statewide ADA Sidewalk Improvements - State of KansasClient: KDOT - Bureau of Construction, Topeka, Kansas The MHS Construction Engineering staff is recognized as a technical leader in Public Right of Way and Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines. As a FHWA compliance mandate, KDOT embarked on a new annual improvements program in 2014 to achieve ADA compliance of existing pedestrian walkway connections to State Highways. MHS was selected as one of 3 design firms to complete the 2014 Statewide program of work. Following a successful completion to the 2014 program, and KDOT’s evaluation of each consultants plan documents and level of service, MHS was awarded the full State Program in 2015. Each project consisted of field data collection, ADA conformance evaluation, field engineering, construction inspection, material testing, and documentation of 105 municipal sites in 2014 and 290 sites in 2015.

Basehor Bridge ReplacementClient: KDOT - District 1, Bonner Springs, Kansas This City of Basehor, Kansas, bridge replacement project was required to replace an existing narrow steel truss bridge over Hog Creek on 178th Street in Leavenworth County. Key elements of the project included the re-alignment of the roadway and bridge location, raised elevation of the bridge to remove from the flood plain, pile bent abutments, spread footing pier walls, bank stabilization, storm water drainage structures, subgrade modification, and the reconstruction of the gravel county road. This project was administered by KDOT District 1 Bonner Springs office. MHS provided Resident on site inspection materials testing, as well as KDOT CMS documentation.
Fairmount Road ImprovementClient: Leavenworth County, Kansas MHS staff has extensive experience in providing construction engineering services on projects funded by the KDOT High Risk Rural Roads (HRRR) Program.
Ogg Road Low Water BridgeClient: Johnson County Parks and Recreation District, Kansas MHS was selected by the Johnson County Parks and Recreation District to respond to a rapid road failure located in the City of Shawnee following an extreme storm event. The initial scope included inspection of the failure and production of a capital improvements mitigation plan. Topographic survey and design services were advanced in a timely manner to re-open the 300-lf roadway segment and associated culvert crossing. The project included hydraulic storm modeling, permitting, and plan production for a Double-Cell 12’x4’ reinforced box culvert; roadway foreslope embankment modifications with special concrete and rip rap armor wall; and paving and SWPPP erosion control BMPs.
Mill Creek Bank StabilizationClient: Johnson County Parks and Recreation District, Kansas MHS was selected by the Johnson County Parks and Recreation District to respond to a rapid bank failure located at the Mid-America West Sports Complex following an extreme storm event.
Blue Valley School District Pavement ManagementClient: Blue Valley Unified School District #223
In 2010, the Blue Valley School District established a pavement management program to pro-actively manage the pavement assets of the school district which totaled four million plus square feet with a total replacement value exceeding twenty five million dollars. The establishment of the Pavement Management System (PMS) creates a system through which significant savings in resources can be applied while still appropriately maintaining the asset to an acceptable level. In 2015, MHS submitted a comprehensive Pavement Management Report to the school district after a team of surveyors and engineers from MHS spent several weeks gathering field data and analyzing results for approximately 40 facilities that comprise the Blue Valley School District Pavement Network. The Cartegraph pavement management software was updated to contain the field data and a final report generated a summary of the field data collected, a roadway OCI, non-roadway pavement replacement summary, and potential future program enhancements. In addition, new site mapping and pavement infrastructure quantities were provided for six facility sites that were acquired since the previous pavement condition analysis was completed.
Drakes Crossing Storm Drainage Master Plan and DesignClient: City of Kansas City, Missouri
The Drake’s Crossing development project in Platte County, Missouri, is another example of MHS comprehensive urban storm drainage design experience. The 30 acre site consisting of 68 single family lots borders Line Creek a stream noted for existing flooding issues. The project included 3,020 LF of RCP storm pipe, 15 curb inlets and a Dry Cell Detention basin. The project required special permitting with the Corps of Engineers and Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The development also involved public street improvements within the subdivision and Thoroughfare Improvements to 64th Street.

KU West Campus Water Distribution MasterplanClient: University of Kansas
MHS staff worked with University of Kansas and City of Lawrence staff to develop the water distribution master plan for the 460-acre West Campus. The study included domestic water and fire flow modeling, as well as utility corridor engineering. The masterplan included 15,000 LF of new internal campus water mains, a control valve network to create two distinctive pressure zones to serve the campus, and the necessary looping improvements to the City’s water system. MHS staff developed capital cost estimates and the 20-year construction phasing plan for the system. Public presentations were made to the Endowment Association and City of Lawrence Engineering staff. The masterplan continues to serve as a valuable planning tool for stakeholders as the development of West campus continues.
Sewer District No. 3 - Leavenworth County, KansasClient: Leavenworth County Public Works
Sustainable infrastructure design requires selection of the best overall project solution, and not always the cheapest up-front cost option. The Sewer District No. 3 project involved replacing an aging low pressure grinder pump collection with a central collection sanitary system. MHS staff analyzed multiple route options as well as comparison studies of forcemain piping versus conventional gravity systems. The best long term design solution included a combination of both along with revisions to an existing lift station to account for an additional 850 GPM peak flow rate. Life cycle and maintenance cost analysis completed by MHS proved beneficial to County staff in diffusing initial public resistance to the higher cost gravity main / force main combination solution.
Lansing 9-B Sanitary Interceptor ImprovementsClient: City of Lansing, Kansas
MHS provided survey, design, and easement acquisition for new 24-inch sanitary interceptor serving the new Lansing High School and future development of Lansing, Kansas. The 7,555 LF main extension included corridor floodway and public street crossings. Design elements included sanitary flow projections, geotechnical evaluation, route selection, construction drawings, specifications, and acquisition of temporary and permanent easements. Additional elements included a temporary pumping ans storage solution for the high school’s contractor to remain on schedule for a Fall 2015 opening.
Cedar Ridge Subdivision DesignClient: City of Bonner Springs, KS
One of the keys to selecting the best qualified consultant to perform the 134th Street Utility Relocation project in Bonner Springs, Kansas, is the level of familiarity that the Design Team has with the area. MHS staff completed design of the Cedar Ridge Subdivision improvements located adjacent to 134th Street. Along with standard subdivision design requirements MHS provided design of the internal sanitary system and lift station improvements to serve the 35-acre residential development. The system includes 4,0000 LF of gravity main, force main, and the lift station located along 134th Street. The analysis to provide for removing this lift station is a scope item in the current 134th Street Utility Improvements project. MHS offers the added advantage of already being fully familiar with the required design flows that this system will convey to the new forcemain.
Lake Dabinawa Dam & Reservoir StudyClient: Lake Dabinawa Community Council
Storm drainage design requires accurate hydrologic and hydraulic calculations. The Lake Dabinawa project in Jefferson County, Kansas, is a good example of performing thorough due diligence and accurate calculations in storm design. The project consisted of studying an existing 80-acre lake that was surrounded by adjacent housing with limited freeboard to many of the structure low openings. The lake, constructed in 1954 had undergone several alterations over the years and the integrity of the dam and the maximum water surface elevation had come under question by the KDWR. MHS completed dam safety inspections and a reservoir routing study that determined the emergency spillway was undersized along with other deficiencies. Accurate analysis was key to determining the necessary repairs to protect the structure integrity and surrounding property improvements.
North Poplar Interceptor & Falcon Lakes Pump ModificationsClient: City of Basehor, Kansas
MHS performed land surveying and engineering design services to upgrade the city's second largest sanitary pumping station and major north interceptor in Basehor, Kansas. The existing pumping system delivered pump flows that the interceptor was incapable of conveying. The design solution included a combination of upsizing the existing interceptor with 3,900 LF of new 24” ductile iron main, downsizing the pump impellors, and elimination of a secondary lift station. Key design aspects included sanitary loading analysis from existing and proposed developments and acquisition of temporary and permanent easements.
Asphalt Mill, Overlay, UBAS Nova Chip SurfacingClient: Kansas Department of Transportation
KDOT 75-70 KA 3387-01, & 24-44 KA 3720-01 District 1 1R Asphalt Mill, Overlay, UBAS Nova Chip Surfacing Improvements.
The MHS Construction Engineering staff is recognized as a technical leader in Superpave Asphalt and Nova Chip Asphalt inspection and material testing. MHS was selected to perform construction engineering field services and Quality Assurance asphalt laboratory testing services for the two KDOT 1R Superpave surfacing projects in 2014/2015 in Lyndon and Perry, Kansas. The projects consisted of milling, asphalt patching, Superpave overlay, and UBAS surfacing of 5.8 miles of state highway. The work was performed under MHS’s On-Call Construction Engineering contract with the KDOT. MHS has performed On-Call construction engineering services to KDOT for several years.
